Lierre Keith is the American founder and chairwoman of Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF), an anti-transgender lobbying group best known for filing amicus briefs opposing transgender rights in court cases across the United States. She is also the co-founder of radical environmentalist group Deep Green Resistance and the author of multiple books about food activism and environmentalism.

That's the fairytale, in this [transgender identity], that your body is just chopped up parts. This, again, is the keynote of sadism moving into necrophilia ... that's what Dr. Frankenstein does; he chops up corpses and digs up graves and takes chunks of dead bodies and puts them back together, and it's hard for me to ignore that parallel ... if children are there, it's because bad things have happened to them, and they need help getting out.

Work

Keith has been involved in activism since the early 1980s. According to her CV, she acted as the founding editor for the now defunct publication Vanessa and Iris: A Journal for Young Feminists between 1982 and 1985. She belonged to a number of small protest organizations throughout the 1980s and 1990s, and in 1992 published her first book, Conditions of War.

Starting in 1994, Keith hosted The Radical-Feminist Lesbian Festival, which would later serve as the foundation for a Women’s Liberation Front festival that operated from 2016 to 2019.

Keith published the ecological activism book The Vegetarian Myth in 2009, and co-authored Bright Green Lies in 2021 alongside Max Wilbert and Derrick Jensen. She also edited Jensen’s The Derrick Jensen Reader in 2012.

In 2011, Keith co-authored Deep Green Resistance with Jensen and Aric McBay and co-founded a radical environmental group of the same name. By early 2022, McBay had left the organization because of anti-transgender sentiments among its leadership. He claims that much of DGR’s membership left for the same reason. Two days after McBay’s public blog post, DGR issued a response that suggested transgender women would be invading women’s spaces if they were invited into them.

Women's Liberation Front

Keith co-founded WoLF as its chairwoman in New Mexico on August 5th, 2016, alongside Executive Director Mahri Irvine, President and Director Kacie Moon, Secretary and Director Liz Fedak, Treasurer and Director Beth Lowe and Treasurer Charlotte Mountain and incorporator Mary Lou Singleton. She is not named on their first Form 990 in 2019, filed and made public as a result of receiving 501(c)(3) nonprofit status on February 28th, 2018. She is, however, listed as WoLF’s founder on their website.

WoLF’s primary activism has taken the form of filing over a dozen amicus briefs in anti-transgender court cases. They have also worked hand in hand with the anti-abortion Heritage Foundation, and representatives have appeared on Tucker Carlson’s now-defunct Fox news show.

Keith regularly appears as a representative of WoLF, often alongside Natasha Chart and Kara Dansky. She has publicly campaigned against allowing transgender women to serve their sentences in women’s prisons, and appeared on Fox News to support legislation that would ban transgender women from sports.
